Australia recently enacted the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024, which includes restrictions on children's use of social media.
In a statement on Friday, Hafid noted that the Australian amendment is similar to Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 concerning Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection, or PP Tunas in Indonesia.
"We discussed the restrictions on social media for certain ages," she remarked after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday.
According to the minister, efforts to ensure the implementation of child protection regulations in the digital space include joint campaigns involving all elements of society.
Hafid said PP Tunas emerged to suppress the circulation of negative content that could threaten children in the digital space.
This regulation requires every electronic system organizer to filter content that could endanger children, provide an easily accessible reporting mechanism, and ensure a fast and transparent remediation process.
PP Tunas also regulates the classification of social media access based on age and risk level. She explained that children aged 13 and under can only access low-risk social media platforms with parental consent.
Meanwhile, children aged 13 to 15 also require parental or guardian permission to access low-risk platforms, while those aged 16 to 18 are allowed to access platforms that are considered high-risk with the consent of parents or guardians.
Only those aged 18 and over can have full access to digital platforms.
According to the provisions, digital platform providers are responsible for educating children and parents to improve their digital literacy.
