Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Indonesia's National Library (Perpusnas) has announced plans to build 21 new library buildings and renovate eight existing ones using this year’s Special Allocation Fund for Infrastructure (DAK Fisik).

Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, Perpusnas Secretary Joko Santoso said that the libraries slated for renovation will receive updated infrastructure and modern supporting tools, including information technology equipment.

He added that Perpusnas will also assist these libraries in expanding their collections to help them meet national library standards.

In addition, Perpusnas plans to utilize the Non-Physical Special Allocation Fund (DAK Non-Fisik) to support activities aimed at improving literacy, preserving historical manuscripts, and enhancing data management for libraries.

“The funds will support various literacy-building activities at 207 libraries across districts and cities,” Santoso said.

He also noted that Perpusnas aims to digitize and adapt ancient manuscripts into more accessible and engaging formats with support from local communities.

Despite the government's push for fiscal efficiency, Santoso stressed that Perpusnas remains committed to delivering high-quality public services to strengthen the nation's literacy.

“We are determined to improve our services nationwide. This includes providing quality, accessible reading materials—both in print and digital formats,” he stated.

He reiterated that most of Perpusnas’ programs are designed to transform libraries into inclusive public spaces, enabling people to develop skills and knowledge through literature.

“We will continue to fight for that objective,” he affirmed.
