The passing of the Pope, who set a great example of compassion and peace, is a profound loss for the world, the minister said.
“Pope Francis was a prominent figure of love, moral integrity, support for peace, and solidarity with the poor and marginalized,” Sugiono added.
In the condolence book, he wrote that Pope Francis' visit to Indonesia last year would always be remembered as a moment of hope and unity for Indonesia and the world.
He also expressed hope that the Pope may rest in eternal peace.
During his visit, Sugiono personally conveyed his condolences to the Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia, Archbishop Monsignor Piero Pioppo.
The two also spoke about the late Pope Francis.
The Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See in Jakarta opened its doors to Indonesians wishing to express their condolences following the death of Pope Francis.
In addition to Sugiono, Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar also paid tribute to the late pontiff at the nunciature.
Several condolence wreaths — including from President Prabowo Subianto, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai — were displayed within the nunciature complex.
